This solo had to be tabbed out. Nuno Bettencourt is a mad man!
There’s a lot going on in this song, here are some notes on the tab:
I don’t think Nuno plays the riff in the chorus live. Instead he plays the rhythm chords which I have demonstrated only in the first chorus.
Nuno uses two fingers for the double stop bend in measure 113. I only use 1 finger because it feels better for me.
The 1 1/2 step bend in measure 114, Nuno actually bends with his pinky but it’s a full step bend on the 13th fret. I choose to hit the same pitch with a 1 1/2 step bend on the 12th fret, because I’m not good at bending with my pinky finger.
In measure 124, Nuno slides from the 5th string D string live, but the studio sounds like a half step bend which is what I choose to play. The second part of this solo is not all hammer ons but a combination of hammer-ons and pulls-offs. At least it sounds this way to my ears and looks like he does it this way from live video footage.
Sometimes I add Vibrato to notes in the chorus out of feel. But the tab does indicate vibrato. That is because there is no vibrato in the studio take.
In measure 141…In the studio take, you’ll hear the pattern (0-8-12-0-8-12) instead of what I do (0-8-12-8-0-Rest). I took this approach so I could grab the double stop bend in time. It’s almost impossible for me otherwise. Nuno also kind of puts a rest in there so he can grab that last bend as well.
I think that covers it! Good luck with this one.
