I’ve gotten a lot of requests to redo this video. The original was done long before this page became popular – at the time, I was just using some quick videos to help my local students practice at home. This one really deserves the better production quality and accurate tab. Lots of notes on this one:
INTRO DELAY
Took a lot of messing around to get the delay to where I thought it was right. One trick is to not palm mute the very first note. For those with Amplitube or just wanting to see my settings, check out my Patreon page.
SWING
Fills in measure 19 and 57 has the classic Slash 16th note swing. So be sure to swing those licks as much as you can. I didn’t get that right in my initial video.
SOLO POSITIONS
With Solos 1 and 2, I believe the positions and all that are correct from what I could see from live performances. Live, he plays some of those licks with hammer ons and pull offs, but the bends are in there in the studio version. Forgive My 1 finger double stop vibrato on the 12th fret in measure 49. Jason always nails those with utmost natural flair, but it’s a weakness of mine that I’m working on.
SLIDES
A slide magically appeared on my pinky finger in measure 102 😅I studied the slides from the isolated track, but in the recording, they cut out when guitar riff in measure 107 kicks in. Slash does live too, Instead of doing all of the slides. There’s subsequently more slides happening while the riffing is going on in measures 108 – 110. We could have added them to the tab, but I really wanted to avoid messy screen tabs with multiple pictures.
CHORUS FILLS
Also, there are some fills with delay in the chorus, but I didn’t feel it was necessary to tab those. Slash doesn’t play those live. They are all in the backing track I created, so check that out – it’s fun to play along with.
POWER CHORDS
In measure 131, I played the power chords with the added Major thirds in them, which is what I hear prominently in the mix. It’s possible that these are overdubs. I put them in brackets to show you what I mean in the tab. I like playing them because it sounds like the song, but if you feel it’s tricky to get them in, just do the power chords – which is what I think Slash plays live. That, or he possibly plays single notes – whatever floats your boat!
For the last chord, I am hearing an Em7, not E7#9. My ears aren’t hearing the major third in there, nit it could be just buried in the mix. E7#9 is the cool funky chord in the verse of Hendrix’s purple haze. There’s also an overdubbed note with delay happening over that chord. It’s gradually tuned down from the tuning peg as it lowers in pitch.
I feel like I got all of the most important things from the studio version in here. I tried to stay as close as possible to the original, as well taking into account what they do in their live performances. This one is super fun to jam along with, so be sure to check out the backing track and tones on Patreon.
