It’s been a while since we added new Hendrix! Here are some notes on this recording:
RING FINGER
Hendrix uses his index finger to let the note ring at the beginning of the song. I’m using my ring finger because I’m more comfortable that way.
INTRO FEEDBACK
I’m not using a foot pedal to fade in the volume. I created a fade with automation after recording on camera. Because I am using amp simulation software, I can’t create feedback in realtime so I cranked my Marshall JVM and recorded feedback from that to get the same kind of vibe. I added the track in and you can still hear the dry take from my on-camera playing as well. Just with that intro. So basically, if you were to play this live with an amplifier, you can get feedback just by standing close to your amp with it on crank while letting the note ring out. Just as it’s tabbed.
FADEOUT
On beat 2 of measure six on the original recording (at 12 seconds) there’s a little fadeout happening. I can’t exactly pick out what’s going on because of the low-fi quality. So I just played the riff as I normally would.
TONE
Speaking of low-fi, I tried to get my tones as close as possible to the original, but it started to sound kind of empty when I matched closely. To help fill out the sound, I added a little gain and distortion to the bass. It’s filling things out a little more, and I’m pretty happy with the overall sound now.
FILLS
I didn’t tab out the fills (which you hear in the background in the verse riffs). Hendrix doesn’t play them live. But they are fun to play along with in the backing track that’s available for Patrons.
